Welcome to Essaouira Medina!
Essaouira is a charming little town in the western Moroccan economic region of Marrakech-Tensift-Al Haouz, on the Atlantic coast.
Since the 16th century, the city was also known by the Portuguese name of Mogador or Mogadore. The Berber name means the wall, a reference to the fortress walls that originally enclosed the city.
Archaeological research shows that Essaouira has been occupied since prehistoric times. The bay of Essaouira is partially protected by the island of Mogador, making it a peaceful harbor protected against strong marine winds.
Essaouira has long been regarded as one of the best anchorages of the Moroccan coast. They visited the Carthaginian navigator in the 5th century BC and established the trading post of Arambys.
Around the end of the 1st century BC or early 1st century AD, the Berber king Juba II established a factory of Tyrian purple, treatment of Murex and purple shells found in the intertidal rocks at Essaouira and Purpuraires Iles.
This dye the purple stripe in Imperial Roman Senatorial togas. A Roman villa was excavated on the island Mogador. A Roman vase was found, as well as coins from the 3rd century AD. Most of the findings are now visible in the Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah, and the Archa eological Museum of Rabat.
The program:
The start will be at 8:00 we leave Marrakech and drive through the highway to Essouira or Mogardor (old name).
Before arrival in the city, we drive through a field of Argan trees and we have the chance to stop to take photos, also we will be attented by Argan women cooperative, in order to obtain information on Argan nuts and how Berber work on it to make different types of oil and cosmetic products.
Afterwards, we will continue our trip to Essaouira, on arrival, we will be greeted by our guide to the city, he will take us through the narrow streets of Medina and show us around.
Whilst sightseeing with our guide we will stop for lunch at the beach, after lunch we will enjoy the coast of Essaouira enjoying the radiant sun to take a swim in the Sea.
At 17:00 pm we will head back to Marrakech. Arriving in Marrakech at 19:00pm.
